Cafferty Clinic poises itself to meet the needs of those suffering from deadly addictive disorder

By: PRLog
The Cafferty Clinic, a private psychotherapy practice in Encinitas, CA, continues work to be an in network provider with insurance companies with the vision of meeting the needs of those suffering as a result of mental health and addictive disorders. In the midst of an opioid epidemic, too few providers are accessible to those in need due to a low reward and high output healthcare reimbursement system. The Cafferty Clinic will provide this care regardless.
ENCINITAS, Calif. - July 25, 2016 - PRLog -- Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the influx of patients seeking providers has overwhelmed care systems throughout San Diego County. Physicians and behavioral healthcare practitioners throughout the county have had waiting lists as health insurers spend upwards of 4-6 months credentialing new providers in what from an outside perspective appears to be systemic, intentional inertia that is designed to keep costs down for third party payers.

Often in medicine and in psychotherapy, reimbursement rates for in-network providers are often less than half of what they make as a cash pay provider. Seemingly "in-network" status should be advantageous and enticing for providers, but the current system is often viewed as anything but. It is typically a much higher administrative burden for providers and an increased risk of not being compensated for their time, along with the decreased compensation. Despite this, some insurance companies have begun to make attempts to fill the void in care for patients who are awaiting providers who are accepting patients. In addition, some providers are also making attempts to fill the void.

The Cafferty Clinic, a private psychotherapy and counseling practice located in Encinitas, CA, has been awarded in-network status with Cigna and Beacon Health Plans. It has also been certified to treat patients with TriCare Health insurance. Several other insurance companies are currently pending.

The Cafferty Clinic has made the decision to dedicate itself to filling the behavioral healthcare gap in North San Diego County. Currently there are very few psychotherapy providers who are even accepting health insurance. Some statistics suggest less than half of them will. The Cafferty Clinic is led by James "Kansas" Cafferty, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor, Commissioner to the NAADAC NCC AP, and 17-year resident of North County. He already owns and operates an intensive outpatient treatment center for chemical dependency in Encinitas called True North Recovery Services, which was founded in 2011 and has focused on treating locals in need since that time. It was through his experience operating this facility that he came to understand the desperate need for in-network providers at the outpatient level of care. As patients would near completion of his program, he would be working with them to find qualified providers to maintain their treatment at the outpatient level of care that they were now prepared for. He often struggled, even with all of his resources, with this task.

Patients completing intensive outpatient treatment programs in general are still in need of psychiatrists, internal medicine physicians, and psychotherapists who specialize in the treatment of addiction related psychosocial problems. These patients no longer need to dedicate extensive hours every week to their treatment, but that doesn't mean they are out of the woods either and Cafferty would frequently find that there was what he calls "a black hole" of addiction providers to receive these patients who had by this time completed extensive work on themselves and their lives.

This created a sort of mandate for Cafferty ethically. In the midst of an opiate addiction epidemic, he could not sit back and watch people who had completed months of work just disappear into the abyss without the support that was most likely to cement all of their hard work. Relapse is always a risk in addiction treatment, but not completing the cycle of care elevates this risk significantly. That is where the Cafferty Clinic comes in. The Cafferty Clinic will be providing in-network care whenever possible, and out-of-network care when it is not, so that people who have often spent sometimes in excess of 50k-100k as a result of the uncovered costs of sober living homes and residential treatment centers, can receive the long term support they need to continue to remain in recovery. He wants to help them to keep their investment.

In a system of care where costly residential or inpatient care is the primary intervention in the practices of many providers that treat addiction, it only makes sense financially for third party payers to cover the cost of simple outpatient care extensively. While they have not generally aligned their values with this concept, the Cafferty Clinic would like to help the Encinitas community to keep its residents happy, healthy, and in recovery.
