Most People Forget About Audio Quality…

Most people are incredibly preoccupied with the photographs and videos surrounding their big day – everything is visual. Although videos contain sound, it’s not something anyone loses sleep over. Unless, of course, you’re a videographer! While we don’t recommend a DIY approach to recording your big day on the silver screen, we’d rather you had a few tricks up your sleeve than to have completely missed the boat on recording you and your guests on the day of your vows.

First Of All – Remember Your Vows…

…most people forget them until they’re on the spot. Perhaps the day of, trying to memorize their lines…

But guess what – this is arguably the most important part of your wedding. Why, then, are we so obsessed with photography? Forget your family and friends for a moment – having a clear recording of your promise to the person you marry is worth all the photographs in the world. So use that as your motivation for getting serious about capturing audio!

Use A Lavalier…

Although not always necessary, it’s best not to leave this to chance. If you’re not sure what you’re doing, and you don’t have high quality in-camera microphones, stop what you’re doing right this instant and buy at least one lavalier. The solution for questions concerning audio quality usually involves proximity. To be clear, you can’t push a horrible microphone next to someone’s mouth and expect quality. That said, you CAN place a mediocre microphone closer to someone speaking and get a better result than if it was further away. Lavaliers bridge the quality gap that way.

With this in mind, we recommend using two lavaliers during the ceremony. While we don’t always follow this advice ourselves, we know what we’re doing. If you’re questioning whether or not you do, just buy a second lavalier. Better to have one and not need it than to not have one at all.

Always Bring Backup…

…especially for your toasts. You don’t want to leave this portion of the event up to fate. Toasts are a time when the audio needs to be loud and clear so your cameras can pick it up over the din of everyone else. If this is happening during a dinner, you’ll have to hear the toasts over the clinking of glassware and plates. If this is happening outside, you’ll have to hear what the maid of honor is saying over the wind or rain or who knows what. If your frontline system for amplifying voices fails, you plainly CANNOT expect to get quality audio outside of a backup system. Don’t leave home without it!

Is There A Lectern? Add A Mic!

If there is a designated place for people to speak, make sure there is a dedicated way to amplify their voices. This sounds common sense, but is overlooked more often than you’d think. Make sure you check all of the “obvious” boxes before you write them off. The chances of having a dedicated sound tech on the day of your wedding, unless hired ahead of time, is slim to none. If you’re renting a venue, make sure you ask about the sound setup – including whether there will or will not be someone there to ensure quality control the day of. Group think for event planning tends to lend itself towards an absence of the things you need when you need them most.
