Umpqua Bank, a subsidiary of Umpqua Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ:UMPQ), has opened a neighborhood store in Portland, Ore.’s Sellwood neighborhood. The new location is one of five the bank plans to open in the Portland area before the end of the year. The Sellwood store offers several defining features that include a roll-up garage door with outdoor seating, an eco-roof and digital community displays. The store is also challenging area residents and businesses to select an improvement project where Umpqua will donate up to $10,000 and work jointly with residents to complete. Located on the corner of SE 13th and Bidwell, across the street from the Sellwood Public Library, the new location is one of 21 Umpqua Bank stores in the greater Portland metropolitan area.
Umpqua Bank’s neighborhood stores redefine conventional banking practices and design. Similar to cafés and other gathering places, these locations are embedded in established communities, providing residents and visitors with an engaging space to browse local merchandise, shop online, enjoy a cup of coffee and learn about local events, in addition to banking.
“Our neighborhood stores are located where people live, work and play and the Sellwood community offers the perfect combination of all three,” said Ray Davis, president and CEO of Umpqua Bank. “Our connection to Sellwood has been in the making for some time and we look forward to fully serving the community with our unique blend of banking and community focus. Our associates have already made an impact getting to know residents and business owners to learn about what issues are important to them and how we can join together to make a difference.”
The new 1,800-square-foot Sellwood store features include:
- A Discover Wall digitally presenting bank products and services for customers to peruse before printing and taking away items of interest.
- An electronic community bulletin board showcasing neighborhood photographs and events.
- A LocalSpotlight program featuring Sellwood/Moreland merchants and their products.
- Free Umpqua Blend coffee and Smith Teamaker personally crafted teas.
- A Computer Café for online banking and Internet surfing.
- Outdoor café seating.
- Artistic features depicting Sellwood’s connection to Portland’s Springwater Trail.
- An eco-roof with plants in bloom.
Umpqua’s Sellwood store will be managed by Elizabeth Galbreath, who previously served as assistant manager at Umpqua’s Cultural District location in downtown Portland and is a familiar face in the Sellwood community. Galbreath and her team will provide personal banking, small business and commercial lending solutions in-person and online.
The Sellwood store has its own Twitter handle @sellwoodumpqua and microsite, www.UmpquaBank.com/Sellwood, where associates will post news about store events, special promotions and community happenings.
The store will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be an all-day open house this Friday, May 21, for neighbors and friends.
In celebration of the store opening, Umpqua Bank will launch the Sellwood “Build Your Block” Challenge. Through this challenge, Umpqua Bank will grant up to $10,000 to the top Sellwood neighborhood improvement project nominated by local residents. Nominations will be accepted online and in-store beginning June 7. Complete challenge details and nomination guidelines will be released the week of May 31.
